Time has rapidly flown by and this month will see the end of Nick's 4 month stint with us before he leaves for his new venture in Somerset. Nick has thoroughly enjoyed the welcome he received here and is leaving with very happy memories. As many of you will have already seen Jamie Parr started with us in April and is settling in well to his new job. Jamie has 6 years of experience in mixed practice, the last 4 years in East Carmarthenshire and the Gower. He is very enthusiastic to develop his skills in herd health and fertility management and is also highly respected in the equine world. Jamie also has the added advantage of being a Welsh speaker.
Due to his broken hand Ryan has been out of action but is hoping to return in the middle of May when Nick finishes. This has meant that Michael Johnson has joined us earlier than originally planned and is already settling in well. Michael qualified from Edinburgh last year and has since worked in Australia before returning to the UK. Being a farmers son, Michael is particularly interested in cattle and sheep disease management and in studying different farming systems. With a large suckler herd and sheep flock at home and a dairy unit with his uncle he is already a skilled stockman.

UBROLEXIN- A NEW MASTITIS TUBE LAUNCHED

Ubrolexin, has been launched by Boehringer Ingelheim the maker of Leo Yellow. It is a combination of 2 antibiotics, Cefalexin (similar to Cobactan) and Kanamycin (similar to one of the Leo Yellow components) which are both proven antibiotics but have additionally been shown to work in synergy which means the combined effect of the antibiotics is greater than the individual parts. It has been shown in trials to hit clinical mastitis strongly and reduce cell counts. It offers a different combination of antibiotics to other tubes available so will be a valuable addition to our range. Treatment is recommended with 2 tubes 24 hours apart. It comes in a box of 20 tubes (10 courses) costing £68.96 and has a 5 day milk withdrawal. Please ask our vets for more details.

SPECIAL OFFER - OVINE ENZOOTIC ABORTION

There is currently a special offer for the Chlamydophila vaccine for enzootic abortion in sheep. There is some short dated stock available from the manufacturer with 60 doses free on top of 40 whilst stock lasts. Currently the vaccine costs £59.06 for 20 doses (£2.95 per dose) but with the offer it would cost £118.12 for 100 doses (£1.18 per dose). The vaccine offers immunity for 3 years. If there has been a previous enzootic problem in your flock it may be worth considering doing your non pregnant replacements over 5 months of age or even some ewes with lambs at foot but this batch of vaccine will need to be used quickly due to the short expiry date.
